SUSTAINABILITY

We take it seriously

At its core, RootBound is a mission to push for better education and more awareness of sustainability in all aspects of society. We hope to stand as a living example of what events should strive towards. We know we’re not perfect, but we’re getting better all the time, working hard to deliver the most sustainable event we can. We’re optimistic about the future of the event industry and we believe that changes such as these, can be adopted at large-scale events globally.

Sustainability is a holistic system that requires participation from everyone within our magical little community, so we encourage you to get involved in the movement as much as you’d like. Join a volunteer team, attend a workshop, learn some new things, inspire someone else’s learning experience, and be the change that you would like to see in the world! We’re all in this together.

Our team is still learning, so we appreciate the value of a fresh perspective. If you notice something you think could be done better, or if you have some skills to share at the event, we’d love to hear from you. Drop us a line.

Read on to see some of the measures we’ll be putting in place.

🌱 LANDCARE 🌴

Bring your gloves, boots, and a smile; we’re gonna get a little dirty!

It is with great pride that we continue our landcare collaboration with the Nywaigi people of Mungalla Station!
They have several landcare projects running on their wetland property and we’ll be joining in with one of the restorations. This will help improve water quality in the surrounding environment and improve habitat for the local bird-life.

The RootBound team are excited to be contributing to such a project as it is very much aligned with one of our core values:

LEAVE THE LAND IN A HEALTHY STATE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

🌞 SOLAR POWER 🌞

We’re stoked to announce that our markets, Revive Hive and Art Gallery zones all run on solar power.

Solar panels charge all day, energy efficient LEDs glow all night!

In an ideal world we would love to see our entire event running on renewables, but we’re not quite there yet. This kind of thing takes a lot of money and know-how, and we’re still working our way towards it. We’ll keep building on it and incorporate more and more renewable as the event grows and evolves.

🎓 EDUCATION 🎓

RootBound plays host to a range of informative and hands on workshops and info sessions as an integral part of our festival programming. Rock up with an open mind and we guarantee you will walk away with some useful knowledge that you can adapt into your everyday life.

We’re all about inspiring the community to minimise our impact on the environment.

🚮 WASTE MANAGEMENT 🚮

For starters, we sort all of the recyclable materials from the bins to deliver them to the appropriate facility.

The compostable stuff is sent into compost bins to deliver its nutrients back to the local environment. You can help here as well by using the correct bins to dispose of your rubbish. Feel free to chuck in your own food scraps from camp too (No meats or rubbish thanks, just veges). It'll be easy; the bins will all be clearly labelled.

You’re probably already doing it in your day-to-day life, might as well do it at the festivals too!

🚽 TOILETS 🧻

Our event uses special toilets which use a composting process to turn your poo into fertiliser! Not only does this make a great source of nutrients for plants, but it also eliminates the nasty chemicals used by porta-loos.

The “humanure” from RootBound 2022 will be used as fertiliser on our landcare project in 2023! Don’t worry, it can’t hurt you. It doesn’t even smell. Its’s just like mulch.
Bring ya gloves just the same though  🧤

Toilet paper is 100% recycled, provided by Who Gives A Crap. They spend 50% of their profits building toilets in developing regions of the world!

🍃 LEAVE NO TRACE 🍂

Leave No Trace Australia are a national non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting and inspiring responsible outdoor travel and recreation. They promote the empowerment of individuals, companies, and communities to accept responsibility for the conservation of their natural environment. This is achieved through research and education, and by forming partnerships to foster the development of minimal-impact skills and ethics.

RootBound are proud to be supporters of Leave No Trace Australia and encourage all festival-goers to look over the seven principles of Leave No trace before attending. Have a think about the kind of things you’re going to bring: If you’re just gonna bin it, maybe don’t bring it!

👶 FOR THE KIDS 👶

We’re always talking about the environmental stuff, but RootBound also understands that sustainability is a holistic system that requires careful consideration of the economic and social sides of life too. One of the core fundamentals of the entire sustainability movement is ensuring that the next generation builds on our knowledge and has the opportunity to enjoy the things we’ve been able to. We encourage you to bring your kids along to the event and get them involved in a workshop or two. There’ll even be a dedicated play-space nearby, so mum and dad can take a breather for a moment!

IT ALL STARTS WITH YOU!

Here’s a few things we can all do to help minimise our impact throughout these kind of events. Remember, we’re all part of the same system!

🚐 CARPOOL 🚙

Save money on fuel, save the environment, mini road trip with the squad!

♻️ RECYCLE ♻️

Think before you bin! – Please be aware of where you put your rubbish! The bins are clearly marked, and it makes our job sorting rubbish so much easier. Plus, it gives you the satisfaction of knowing that you helped us out. Better yet, take your rubbish home with you and sort it properly back in civilisation. Use separate bin bags at your campsite, same as you would at home.

☕ REUSE 🍼

Avoid single use water bottles and kitchen gear – Bring reusable water bottles and coffee cups.

🍴 SINGLE-USE STUFF 🥤

Avoid anything single-use if you can manage it. If you can’t, please try to use biodegradable or recyclable materials.

❌🍾NO GLASS 🍾❌

Cans are much more sustainable and they don’t shatter into a thousand tiny shards of ouch! Please follow this as it will be strictly enforced.

🚬 CIGGY BUTTS🚬

Please make sure you bin them. Use an old mint-tin as a personal mini-ashtray, or choose one of your pockets to be your “Durry Pocket” for the weekend. It keeps them out of the waterways and off the reef.

💦 WATER 💦

Please only use what you need, and don’t leave the tap running. We’re the driest inhabited continent on the planet, so clean water is a luxury with a limited supply.

🎇 GLOWSTICKS 🎇

We recommend you don’t buy them at all, as they’re a wasteful single-use plastic product. But if you’re going to bring them with you, please make sure you take them home too.
